Manganese and silicon are the main alloying elements used in carbon steel. Manganese is one of the most important deoxidizers in the steelmaking process, almost all steel grades need to use manganese to deoxidize. Because the oxygen product generated when using manganese to deoxidize the low melting point, easy to float; manganese can also increase the effect of silicon and aluminum and other strong deoxidizing agent deoxidation. All industrial steel need to add a small amount of manganese as a desulfurization agent, so that the steel can be hot-rolled, forging and other processes without fracture, manganese is also the most important alloying element in each steel, in the alloy steel will also add more than 15% of manganese to increase the structural strength of steel. Silicon is the most important alloying element after manganese in pig iron and carbon steel. In steel production, silicon is mainly used as a deoxidizer for molten metal or as an alloying additive to increase the strength and improve the properties of steel. Silicon is also an effective graphitizing medium, turning carbon in cast iron into free graphitic carbon [2]. Up to 4%, silicon is added to standard gray and ductile cast irons. And large amounts of manganese and silicon are added to the steel in the form of ferroalloys: ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon.
The raw materials for producing manganese-silicon alloy are manganese ore, manganese-rich slag, silica, coke, dolomite (or limestone), and fluorite. Production of manganese-silicon alloy can use a manganese ore or a mixture of several manganese ores (including manganese-rich slag). As manganese silicon alloy requires low iron and phosphorus content than high carbon ferromanganese, it requires smelting manganese silicon alloy of manganese ore has a higher manganese iron ratio and manganese phosphorus ratio. The higher the manganese content of the manganese ore used, the better the indicators.
