Chromium can dissolve in hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and perchloric acid, and passivate after meeting nitric acid, and no longer react with acid. Chromium can form alloys with magnesium, titanium, tungsten, zirconium, vanadium, nickel, tantalum, and yttrium. Chromium and its alloys have strong anti-corrosion ability.
Chromite
About 50 kinds of chromium-containing minerals have been found in nature, which belongs to the oxide group, chromate group, and silicate group respectively. There are also a few hydroxides, iodates, nitrides, and sulfides. Among them, chromium nitride and chromium sulfide minerals are only found in meteorites. The chromium minerals with industrial value all belong to the chromium spinel group of minerals, their chemical formula is (Mg, Fe2+)(Cr, Al, Fe3+)2O4 or (Mg, Fe2+)O(Cr, Al, Fe3+)2O3, and their Cr2O3 content is 18% to 62%.
The common chromium minerals are.
(1) chromite, the chemical composition of (Mg, Fe) Cr2O4, between ferrous chromite (FeCr2O4, containing FeO 32.09%, Cr2O3 67.91%) and magnesium chromite (MgCr2O4, containing Mg 20.96%, Cr2O3 79.04%), usually some people will be ferrous chromite and magnesium chromite are also called chromite. Chromite is an equiaxed crystal system, crystals are fine octahedral, usually granular and dense massive aggregate, color is basalt, brown stripes, semi-metallic luster, hardness 5.5, density 4.2 ~ 4.8, with weak magnetic. (2) Chromium-rich crystals, also known as chromium-iron spinel or aluminum chromite, the chemical composition of Fe (Cr, Al) 2O4, containing Cr2O3 32% ~ 38%.
(3) Hard chromium spinel, the chemical composition of (Mg, Fe) (Cr, Al) 2O4, containing Cr2O3 32% ~ 50%. The morphology, physical properties, genesis, production, and use of chromium-rich crystals and hard chromium spinel are the same as those of chromite. The methods of industrial production of chromium metal are aluminum reduction, silicon reduction, carbon reduction, and electrolysis.
Uses of chromite ore
